In life we are at some stage going to have to use the expression"I don't know", so as variety is the spice of life, using different ways to say “I don’t know” would make your conversation far more interesting and natural。

1. Dunno
This word is used informally and in spoken language, especially by teenagers who don’t want to answer their parents!
這個詞為非正式用語,一般在口語中使用,孩子們不想回答父母的問題時會經(jīng)常用到這個詞。
e.g. ‘When do you have to submit this essay?’ ‘Dunno. I can’t remember.'
例句:“你什么時候要交論文?”“不知道,不記得了。”
2. I have no idea/I haven’t a clue/I haven’t the faintest idea
These expressions are used when you have no information and you cannot guess the answer to a question。
這些表達(dá)通常用在你沒有任何關(guān)于這個問題的信息,無法猜到答案的時候。
e.g. ‘What time does the film start?’ ‘I have no idea. Why don’t you call the cinema?’
例句:“電影什么時候開始?” “不清楚,你為什么不打電話問電影院呢?”
e.g. ‘Would you by any chance know where St James’s Street is?’ ‘I haven’t a clue. Sorry.’
例句:“你知道圣詹姆斯大街在哪兒嗎?” “不好意思,不太清楚。”
e.g. ‘Could somebody please explain how this happened?’ ‘I haven’t the faintest idea.’
例句:“有沒有人能解釋一下這是怎么回事?” “我也不知道。”
3. How should I know?/Don’t ask me/Search me
These expressions are used when you do not know something and you feel annoyed that someone is asking you about it。
當(dāng)你不知道問題的答案,又很反感別人問你時,可以這么說。
e.g. ‘Who left this mess on the table?’ ‘How should I know? I’ve only just come home.’
例句:“誰把桌子弄得一團(tuán)亂?” “我怎么知道,我才剛到家。”

e.g. ‘What time did she say she was catching her train? ’ ‘Don’t ask me. I’m always the last to know.’
例句:“她什么時候說她在趕火車來著?” “別問我,我總是最后一個知道的。”
e.g. ‘Why didn’t he ask you for the keys?’ ‘Search me. I’m not a mind reader.’
例句:“為什么他不問你要鑰匙呢?” “不知道,我又不會讀心術(shù)。”
4. Who knows?/It’s anyone’s guess
These are used for saying that you don’t know something because it is impossible for anyone to know it。
當(dāng)你不知道問題的答案,而且其他人也不可能知道的時候,就可以用這兩句。
e.g. ‘Will they ever find the missing aircraft?’ ‘Who knows? The search been going on for such a long time now.’
例句:“他們會找到失蹤的飛機(jī)嗎?” “誰知道呢?搜尋工作已經(jīng)進(jìn)行了這么長時間了。”
e.g. ‘How the situation will develop from here is anyone’s guess.’
例句:“誰都不知道事態(tài)會如何發(fā)展。”
5. Your guess is as good as mine
This is used for saying that you know as little about something as the person who asked you about it。
如果你和提問題的人一樣不知道問題的答案,你就可以這樣說。
e.g. ‘Do you think we will be able to book the restaurant for Friday?’ ‘Your guess is as good as mine.’
例句:“你覺得我們能在周五預(yù)定到這家餐廳嗎?”“我和你一樣不知道。”
6. Not as far as I know
We use this to say that something may be true, but you do not have enoughinformation to know whether it is or not。
當(dāng)你認(rèn)為某件事可能是真的但又不確定的情況下,可以用這個表達(dá)。
e.g. ‘Has Clive left the company? I haven’t seen him for ages.’ ‘Not as far as I know, but I haven’t seen him recently either.’
例句:“Clive離開公司了嗎?我好久都沒見到他了。” “可能吧,我也很久沒見他了。”
7. It beats me
This is a rather informal expression to say that you do not know or understand something. “It” is often left out。
這是一種表達(dá)你不知道或不懂的非正式用語。“it”可省去。
e.g. ‘Why did he do such a stupid thing?’ ‘It beats me’
例句:“他怎么會做這種蠢事?” “不知道啊”
