The reading passage introduced a Steller’s sea cow and illustrated three guesses why this marine mammal died out in 1768. Yet the listening passage discussed all the guesses to overturn the ideas of sea cow extinction from reading.

The first guess offered by reading is that sea cows were over hunted by native Siberians while the listening asserted that sea cows were enormous enough to support feeding the locals for months and the population of Siberians was not big enough to kill off all the sea cows as their food supply.

The second extinction guess from reading is food shortage, kelp to be specific. It believed that the decline of kelp followed by a ecosystem disturbance happened early before 1768 is the reason why sea cows died out. However, the listening argued that ecological disturbances could affect marine animals in all kinds and there was no evidence of declines among other creatures, so the ecological hypothesis is questioned.

The third guess of sea cow extinction is charged upon the European fur traders. The reading passage mentioned fur traders came to the Bering Island after 1741 and the listening passage certified that population of sea cows was at its largest many years before 1700s and the decline was happened before the arrival of fur traders many years ahead, this invalided fur traders kill off sea cows.
