 Your foreign friend is considering coming to your country to visit, but he/she doesn’t know how to plan the trip. What suggestions do you give him/her?

Sample Answer:

Well I would strongly suggest him to sign up with the local travel group. As traveling with group is likely to make the trip more enjoyable, especially for a person who visits the place for the first time. The most convinced reason is that travel group would arrange plenty of tourist attractions in an order. He won’t have to plan what to do and where to go. All he needs to do is to go along and enjoy the beauty of the country.

Besides, group trip could save a lot of time on road. I mean, the transportation is provided to commute from one place to another. For him, there’s no need to worry about how to get to the place he wants. So I think he should join in a travel group.

TASK2

A big cooperation is planning to invest in a factory in your hometown. This factory will create many job opportunities for people, but also bring a lot of pollution at the same time. Do you agree or disagree?

Sample Answer

As a matter of fact, I totally disagree that the cooperation invests in a factory like that.

First of all, the pollution that the factory would bring is obviously the biggest issue. It may bring long-term affect on people’s health, such as respiratory disease, hearing loss etc. Once local people have suffered from these kinds of diseases, their health would never return back to normal.

Then again, more job opportunities may seem to be attractive for local. They could earn much money to afford their family. Whereas, what if they suddenly become sick, they definitely would have to spend more money on the treatment they should receive to get recovered. And at same time, the whole family would suffer.

Announcement: 通知學校要開二手書店

R1: 可以省錢和賺錢

R2: 不占用 dorm 的空間女生非常贊同：

1. 買二手書可以省錢，如一本新的歷史書要$100。

2. 買來的書積攢在宿舍很霸占空間，有了二手書店就可以賣出了。

SAMPLE ANSWER

In the reading material, the university announces that the school would open a second-hand store in the campus. Because it helps students to save money and save space for students in the dorm.

In the conversation, the women completely agree with that.

For one, second-hand books are usually much cheaper than its original price. For example, she bought a new history book for 100 dollars which is way too expensive for a student.

Secondly, once the shop opens, senior students would sell their books rather than keeping those used-book in the dorm. Many student tend to store old books in their rooms, which takes up too much space and brings inconvenience.

Value analysis is a theory that company is likely to promote the profit without changing the price of products.

The professor uses a camera company as an example to illustrate the concept. The company has a top sell product which is pocket camera. In order to make more profits of them. The company has made a survey to customers. According to the feedback of participants, the staff realized most of the consumers don’t care so much about the leather cases, in fact they think it’s kind of waste to have leather ones. Then, company changed the leather cases to nylon ones. As a consequence, the cost of pocket camera has lowered, while they are still popular to customers.

TASK5

問題：男生要打印一個 poster 明天上課用，但是還需要一個小時才能做完，然而 print store 要關(guān)門了， 直到明天上課的時見才會開門

兩種解決方法：

Sample answer:

In the conversation, the man has a problem that he has to print out the poster he prepared for his class tomorrow. He needs one more hour to complete, while the print store is closing.

There are two solutions. For one, he could run to the print store immediately, as there’s enough time for him to do so. Also it’s free. However, the work is not completely done yet.

For another, he can finish the poster as priority, and print it out in the town, Obviously, he will have to pay for it. Personally, I am in favor of the second solution. The most important reason is that, presenting a completed work would give other people a good impression, and also it shows how much you care about the task you were given. So spending another hour on the piece work is a wise thought. Although, he will have to pay the printout. It won’t be too much money for that. Obviously the importance of poster overweights that of the money he pays.

Task 6

【講課要點】

dragonfly 是 most effective predator,

要點一：它們有 wide vision

舉例：compound eyes 可以讓它們從各個方向看到獵物，即使不是正面對著它們飛過來也是可以撲捉到。

要點二：它們有 computer system in their brains

舉例：可以感知獵物飛行速度，從而預測判斷獵物的位置和速率

SAMPLE ANSWER

In the lecture, the professor made a statement that dragonfly is the most effective predator. There are two factors to support that.

To begin with, dragonflies have really wide vision as they have compound eyes. In that case, they can see their preys no matter what directions they are from. Which means, dragonflies can still catch the preys even though they are not in front of them.

Additionally, dragonflies also have computer system in their brains. They can sense how fast the preys fly around them. By doing so, they can estimate the location and the speed of the preys.

Consequently, they can catch their preys successfully.
